GENERAL DATA PROTECTION REGULATION

Data security is about keeping data safe. Many individuals, small business
and major companies rely heavily on their computer systems on a daily basis.
But what happens if the data on these computer systems is damaged, lost
or stolen? Could you afford to lose your important fi les, or worse still, your
client, customer or employee data!

Data loss can occur in many ways. It could be lost or damaged during a
system crash, corrupted through faulty hardware, viruses or power failure,
hacked into by unauthorised users, destroyed by acts of terrorism, or simply
lost through accidental fi le deletion, overwriting or maybe even left on a
mode of transport during travel. However, there are plenty of actions you can
take to ensure you or your business don’t become victims of data loss.

So how can you do this? Ensure you make regular backups of your data and
store them in a separate location. Run anti-virus software on your computer
hardware. Use passwords and write-protect fi les. Perhaps the most important
measure you can take, is to ensure any devices you use to transport data,

such as USB and hard drives, have fi le encryption capabilities. Check out
some of the portable devices on pages 428-430 which all have fi le and
folder encryption software for ultimate protection.

If data protection wasn't already a hot topic, it now has the potential to
impact businesses unaware of the new rules that come into force next year.
Companies of all sizes need to put personal data protection high up on their
to-do lists in advance of the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR)
that come into effect on May 25

th

 2018.

From May 2018 onwards, any breaches of the new GDPR regulations
will see companies pay fi nes of up to €20 million or 4% of their annual
global revenue, whichever is greater. This means that from 2018 onwards,
companies should implement suitable policies and security measures to
protect their client, customer and employees personal data.
